There is a funny scene in the movie Romancing the Stone when Michael Douglas’ character meets Kathleen Turner’s character and agrees to take her to a phone booth hundreds of miles away. He simply refuses to help her carry her completely impractical luggage and a few scenes later goes even further by chopping the heels off her shoes so she can actually walk in them. This little fiasco encompasses the essence of packing for adventure travel. Less is most definitely more!

When in a foreign country it is usually pretty easy to spot the experienced traveler from the novice. The novice is usually dragging a giant suitcase or trying to lug a brightly coloured backpack that is even bigger than they are. They are dressed in the latest I-Must-Have-Adventure-Gear from the most expensive adventure stores and have trekking shoes worth hundreds of dollars. This is not the way to do it for several reasons. The first is comfort. You will usually be doing a lot of walking whenever you go on a vacation and walking with 50 kg of luggage is both tiring and difficult. You will also, most likely, be getting extremely dirty and ruining whatever clothing you take (even if it is expensive adventure clothing and don’t forget that some of your gear may even be stolen. If you show up with all the best and most expensive gear you are also a walking target for hustlers and thieves. With all of this in mind here are a few tips:

Luggage

If you are going to be doing anything even remotely physical and walking any further than a few hundred meters, then a backpack is definitely the way to go. But not all packs are created equal! Think small and inconspicuous. Dark colours like brown and black will attract less attention than a bright purple or red pack. Make sure it is the type of pack that has a flap on the top that closes over the packís opening to keep out water (the types that zip up WILL get your stuff wet). You will also want to put your clothing in waterproof stuff bags? I use standard plastic shopping bags, but there are tougher ones that you can buy from disposals and camping stores. You also want your pack to be as small as possible. Especially if you are only touring (mountaineers may need something bigger). I use a 30 liter pack but would say 45 liters is an absolute maximum for general purpose use. You will be carrying it around a lot and if you cannot fit something in then you probably donít really need it.

Clothing

Think light and breathable! Cotton is always good. Three shirts is usually enough because you can wear one, wash one and have a spare. Take ones with collars to keep the sun off your neck if you are going anywhere remotely sunny. For pants, I like cargoes that can zip off the legs and turn into shorts (which can also double as swimming trunks). Dark colours are always going to hide the dirt and grime so thatís also a good idea. Usually, other than underwear and socks, I donít take much more than this. Remember that if you need something you can always buy it there and usually for a fraction of the price than at home! Donít forget to take some type of hat as being sunburnt is a real drag when you are traveling.

Shoes

Unless you are doing some serious mountaineering then you probably wonít need those $300 Scarpa trekking boots. In many poorer countries you can buy those $300 Scarpas at the local markets for $10 anyway, because some idiot tourist left them outside his door to dry and an enterprising local stole them to sell at the markets! Think comfort ?I usually go for Converse All Stars, but any type of cheap canvas shoe will probably be ok. On a trek across England my Converse shoes allowed my feet to get wet about 10 minutes before my buddyís feet got wet? He was wearing the $300 Scarpas! Once again, if you need something better, you can probably buy it at your destination for a cheaper price.

Other stuff

There are a few things I will never travel without. Sunscreen is the main one because I REALLY hate getting sunburnt. A small multi-tool is often pretty handy too ?donít get a leatherman because you will lose it or get it stolen. You can often buy multi-tools for $5 anyway that work perfectly well. I also always take a lighter ($1 plastic kind) for anything from lighting peopleís cigarettes to sealing the ends of ropes.

The trick to packing for adventure travel is to pack light, inconspicuous and cheap. This avoids you becoming a human pack-mule or a target for thieves and hustlers. You will also find that you will enjoy your traveling more because you wonít be so tired nor worrying about your gear so much.

Inspecting the mechanical condition of your ATV before each ride is important to minimize the chance of being injured or stranded. This also ensures long enjoyment of your ATV. Remember, you can ride farther in one hour than you can walk in a day. Your owner’s manual will show you what equipment to check on your particular machine. Here we have listed for you the ATV Pre Ride Inspection – What You Should Check before Your Ride.

Tires and Wheels

1. Air pressure – Always maintain the recommended tire pressure. Be sure that all tires are inflated to proper pressure. Check that tires on the left side of your ATV are inflated to the same pressure as the corresponding tires on the right side. If the tire pressure on one side is higher than the other side, the vehicle may pull to one side. Under-inflated tires may also cause wheel damage when riding over bumpy terrain. Over-inflation may damage the tires. If the tires are over- or under-inflated, your ATV may not steer or handle properly. To measure pressure accurately (usually 2 to 6 psi), you will need a low-pressure gauge; automotive tire gauges are not accurate for use on ATVs.

2. Condition – Check for cuts or gouges that could cause air leakage.

3. Wheels – To avoid loss of control or injury, make sure axle nuts are tight and secured by cotter pins, and make sure wheel nuts are tightened properly. Grasp the tire at the front and the rear and try to rock it on its axle to detect worn-out bearings or loose nuts. There should be no free play or slip as you rock the wheel.

Controls

1. Throttle and other cables – Make sure the throttle moves smoothly and snaps closed with the handlebars in any position. Check throttle operation while moving the handlebars from fully left to fully right. If your ATV is equipped with an adjustable throttle limiter, check to make sure the adjustment is appropriate for the rider, and that the adjustment is securely set. Check cables and controls for damage from a spill or accumulated dirt and mud, which may restrict full operation.

2. Brakes – Make sure the controls operate smoothly and are adjusted according to the instructions in the owner’s manual. The controls should be positioned for your easy reach. Your brakes are a crucial part of riding and they must always be in excellent working condition.

3. Footshifter – Make sure the footshifter is firmly attached and positioned for safe operation. It should not be so low that your toes are pointed downward at the ground or so high that shifting is awkward.

Lights and Switches

Ignition switch (if equipped) – Check the condition of the switch and make sure it works properly by switching it off and on during your warm-up period.

Engine stop switch – Be sure it turns off the engine.

Oil and Fuel

Check oil level while the engine is off. You could get stranded because you are out of oil or fuel.

Always start your ride with a full tank of gasoline to give you the best chance of getting home from a long ride.

Check for fuel or oil leaks.

Chain/Driveshaft and Chassis

Chain – Inspect your chain for proper adjustment and adequate lubrication. Check for wear.

Driveshaft – If your ATV is equipped with a driveshaft rather than a chain, check for oil leaks. Maintain the oil supply as outlined in your owner’s manual.

Nuts ‘n bolts – Rough terrain will loosen parts. Look and feel for loose parts while the engine is off. Shake handlebars, footrests, etc., before each ride, and periodically check major fasteners with a wrench.

Tool Kit

After completing the pre-ride inspection, check to make sure you have an adequate tool kit in case you encounter any mechanical problems.

Carrying the right tools and equipment with you when you go riding is important for the safe enjoyment of your ATV riding experience. Examine the tool kit that came with your machine. You may want to add a few spare parts — a spark plug or two, perhaps some wire and tape, maybe a headlight bulb. Prepare for the unexpected, and carry what you need to handle any emergencies. Consider carrying a good strong tow rope.

Also remember that off-road riding is hard on your ATV, so it is especially important to perform periodic maintenance as outlined in your owner’s manual. Do not risk injury or vehicle breakdown due to lack of proper maintenance.

One of the best ways that I know of getting high quality backlinks (and hence higher search engine rankings) is to post guest blogs on other people’s websites. The only problem with this method is ‘being bothered’ to go out there and contact relevant website owners, and also having to put up with the fact that only about 20% of the blog owners or administrators say ‘yes’ to your guest blogging request.

Still, in spite of those issues, it does work really really well, and now it works a whole lot better because there is a new website called Content Facilitator that brings together blogs owners with people who are willing to write guest blog posts. In just the few short weeks the network has been open, several members have already had more than 20 high quality articles published on niche related blogs.

And keep in mind that this is NOT a private blog network where you submit substandard content to hundreds of blogs that no-one ever visits simply to build links. These are REAL blogs with a real audience that WANT to publish your high quality content to impress their audiences.

That’s why this is an EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE way to market yourself and your business online. Further great news is that seeing as the owner of Content Facilitator is a good friend of mine, he has allowed me to give you $50 in free advertising credits to use in this network.

Simply join Content Facilitator for free through the link below:

Content Facilitator

…once you’ve signed up and are inside the members area, navigate to the “Get Credits > Use Coupon” section and enter the following into the respective field:

Coupon: DistributeMe

…once you have, $50 worth of free advertising creditswill be loaded into your account to spend as you see fit for your content syndication and distribution needs. Make sure you do this right away however as the coupon is temporary and exclusive to our readers here. I hope you enjoy this and really put it to use. It is a very powerful method of building quality links to help boost your search engine rankings.

While this network is new, membership numbers have doubled each week since opening and so I highly recommend you check it out and claim your free coupon so that you can start building links from quality, relevant websites, operated by real bloggers.

Remember, here is the website link again:

Content Facilitator

And the coupon code for your $50 in free advertising credits is: DistributeMe

If you are planning an outdoor trip to Taman Negara Pahang, you may be interested to know that there is another entrance to the world famous national park. You may be quite familiar with Kuala Tahan and the journey from Kuala Tembeling to the National Park.

But, there is another entrance. The name of the place is called Sungai Relau or its full name is Taman Negara Pahang Sungai Relau. This entrance is located on the western side of Taman Negara. The entrance was only opened to the general public in the early 1990′s. To get here, from the town of Merapoh it is a 7km journey to the park’s office at Sungai Relau. To get to Merapoh, one has to travel a 30km journey southwards by road from Gua Musang or a 100km journey from Kuala Lipis.

Taman Negara Sungai Relau is the popular point for mountain climbing to Gunung Tahan. Hikers attempting the climb from this route to Gunung Tahan will take a mere 2 days as compared to the longer trek of 5 days from Kuala Tahan. A 14-km road links Sungai Relau to Kuala Juram, the foot hill for climbing Gunung Tahan where climbers will be dropped off for their climb up the highest peak on Peninsula Malaysia.

In this park, there are many forest trails. Among the popular trails are the Interpretive Trail, Negeram Trail, Palas Trail and Gua Gajah Trail. The 0.5km Interpretive Trail provides introduction to the rainforest and the ecosystem. The Negeram Trail follows the Sg Relau river and end at Pasir Gelanggang passing through the lowland and swampy forest. The Palas Trail is about 1.6km long. This trail has some hilly terrain, peat swamp and lowland forest.

The trail to Gua Gajah is about 5km long. Gua Gajah is a limestone outcrop and provides shelter for elephants during the monsoon. Inside Gua Gajah, there is a bats chamber where guano and bats are found. The low number of visitors has makes Taman Negara Sungai Relau a heaven for wildlife observation. A newly discovered cave called Gua Jinjang Pelamin is open only to a select few. To attempt this cave exploration with its varied chambers and halls, one has to get in touch with us for the exclusive arrangement.

Taman Negara is considered one of the most extensive protected area consisting of pristine, lowland, evergreen rainforest in Malaysia. For those that loves the outdoors, there are many activities which they can take part in.

Highlights include cave exploration, waterfalls, rivers, streams, night walks, bird watching, panning for gold and more. This area is suitable for independent and group travellers, and also suitable for families with small children. Do contact us if you require further information or wish to make a booking.

When you travel, there are important documents and records that you need with you. Anything can happen during your trip (hopefully not). Not all countries that you will be travelling to are safe. Hopefully you will not encounter lost or stolen luggage, muggers, pick-pockets, scammers during your trip. If you were unlucky when this happen, you may not only lose your cash but important documents too – things like passport, credit cards, your country issued id etc.

You also carry important information with you such as your flight confirmation number, your hotel reservation number, your insurance etc, etc – you get what I mean.

A method which I have found to work well for me when I travel is to have this information easily retrieved. Now with the availability of cloud computing, these important information can be saved on a cloud server and if there is a need to retrieve any of this information, you can easily access them from your smartphone, laptop, or computer at a cybercafe.

I have found that DROP BOX works very well for me. You get a 2GB account and that is more than enough.

I recommend that you scan or photograph your important documents. Documents can be saved or converted to PDF and uploaded to your account. This can be a copy of your hotel confirmation, photographs of your luggage (should they get lost), your passport, identification, medical letter, etc, etc..

You will have the peace of mind that during your travel, should you need to access these important documents, they are easily available for you to use! What about you? Do you have any tips you want to share?
